Remedies for four top blockers to success

I’ve spoken firsthand to hundreds of people this year who are trying to grow their business. These are the biggest four things holding them back, and what the remedy might be for each one.

1. Lack of skill

At the events, I’m showing people the truth of what it takes to market your business. It’s so much more than a post on social media. It’s a real plan for bold new reach i.e. introducing yourself to thousands of new people through ads / networking / speaking / business development. It’s a strategy for getting more people to trial their offer with minimal risk to them. And it’s a focus on offers + pitches into that new community.

When they realise what’s involved, they understand why they haven’t been growing – they’ve been far too insular, far too safe. So the next block becomes: “I don’t know ads”, “I can’t edit videos”, “I’m not a good speaker”.

I tell people to pick the approach that feels most in alignment with their skillset + personality and to commit to learning it. Any skill you see someone leveraging today is a skill they EARNED and there is literally no substitute for hours in. We build skill, self-efficacy and value by getting better over time. And guess what? You’re an adult now and you get to pick what you do next 😉

2. The ‘not fair’ mindset

I’ve stopped so many people mid sentence from telling me it’s not fair. Someone else with less skill went viral, they’ve been at this years and never had a lucky break, there’s a new platform / pressure every year.

I’ve interrupted them and said: “Stop. This is not a lack of skill or opportunity for you. This is a belief it’s supposed to be easier. You’re asking to set your own day, make your own money, invent your own life. Of course it’s going to be hard. Stop looking at other people. Be useful to the people looking at you. Show up. Work like you’re never going to get a lucky break because…you might not. And that’s okay.”

3. The ‘can’t be seen’ fear

“Lisa, what if I get trolled?” / Delete it + block them.

“Lisa, what if people with more knowledge correct me” / They’re honestly not watching you. Only people who can learn from you watch you.

“Lisa, what if I don’t know enough?” / Only share what you have skill, results or training in. (And upskill in the meantime)

“Lisa, it’s not how I was raised.” / Find a way that’s acceptable or go to coaching / therapy to see if those values serve you now.

4. I should have made it by now

So many people compare their careers to their friends’ career. If you stay in a career, you will experience steady growth AND get paid every 30 days for the pleasure.

In entrepreneurship, you have to think in 2-4 year increments. When sharing a new product / brand ALL of the work comes up front. You probably won’t feel the impact of your new marketing campaign / offer / skill initially, but fast forward two years and you’ll will, if…

you stay in the game and stop starting over every two years! Results compound, when you let them.
